My New Life with Lyric
Try a life with no sound. Imagine what you miss-the sound of voices, music, rain, a clock ticking, a coyote, the ocean. That’s what my world had become. I first noticed that I could not hear the ticking of my faithful clock that hangs on the wall next to my desk-it had always been a constant and comforting sound.
I have Lupus, and due to a medication I was taking, I became legally blind in 1999. I lost the ability to drive and reading is difficult. It never entered my mind that I might also lose my hearing. I wish I could find a solution to my blindness as effective as the Lyric has been for my deafness.
I have always been a social person, and when the hearing loss began, I found myself withdrawing more and more. I could not participate in events that had always been a part of my life such as going to church and movies and gathering with friends—even sharing with my husband became a shouting session. I resorted to wearing the behind-the-ear hearing aids but they were little better than nothing.
And then, by chance, my husband, Scott, was searching the internet for venture capital companies and happened upon the company that financed Lyric’s business plan. He became very excited because he knew how much I was struggling. Scott phoned Lyric and had a very pleasant conversation with a gentleman who provided him some technical information-it really does make sense that the closer to the eardrum the device the better quality and less distortion you get- a sentiment apparently lost on competitors. The Lyric technology is really a game changer for the competition who will be struggling with this one for some time to come.
Lyric referred us to the two Lyric hearing centers here in San Diego. We immediately called North County Audiology and made an appointment. I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning-I was so hopeful. Everyone at North County Audiology was very encouraging. After Dr. Woodruff tested my ears, Dr. Smith (who is also hearing impaired and chooses to wear the Lyric) inserted the Lyric into my ears. My life changed instantly.
I love being able to turn off the Lyric. The sound of my husband’s snoring is a thing of the past!! Also, I can once again wear my hair behind my ears without embarrassment. Not only were the behind –the-ear hearing aids unsightly but they occupied all that space where I can again wear my hair.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for developing these wonderful devices.
I am truly grateful,
Margaret K
